What is Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL)?
Trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) describes the loss of water from the skin's surface to the surrounding environment. It is an important factor in maintaining healthy skin, as excessive TEWL can lead to dryness, itching and sensitivity.
TEWL occurs when there is a disruption in the skin's natural barrier, allowing moisture to escape. This disruption can be caused by things like the environment (dry air, low humidity and cold temperatures are all causes of TEWL), ageing, harsh skincare and medical conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Excessive TEWL can leave your skin dry, flaky, itchy and uncomfortable. It can also affect your skin barrier, leaving your skin dull and prone to infection. It can also leave it feeling tight and sensitive.
